Abstract

This paper reviews the theories and practices of achieving the fair distribution of urban social spaces through participatory planning, emphasizing the important role of participatory planning in promoting urban justice and spatial equity. By analyzing successful cases such as the Tempelhofer Feld public space project in Berlin and the community participatory green space planning in Chengdu, this paper demonstrates how participatory planning can enhance community participation, improve the transparency and accountability of the planning process, and promote spatial equity and social inclusion. Despite facing challenges in politics, society, technology, and resources, participatory planning can effectively address these challenges and achieve its positive impacts by adopting innovative strategies and methods. This paper also puts forward suggestions for policymakers and urban planners, aiming to optimize the participatory planning process, and points out the directions for future research, including the applicability of participatory planning in different cultural and political contexts, the development of effect evaluation tools, and its interaction with urban governance and sustainable development goals.
