Abstract

 Universities function as complex social networks where interactions among students, faculty, and administrators shape institutional effectiveness. In Chinese universities, counselors play a crucial role in student management, bridging administrative policies with student welfare. Despite their central role, there is limited empirical research on their social network structures and how these networks influence their professional effectiveness. This study literature review aims to synthesize existing research on the social networks of Chinese university counselors. The review highlights the hierarchical nature of work networks, the fragmented nature of counseling networks, and the varying degrees of emotional support networks among counselors. Based on these findings, the study identifies key challenges and offers recommendations for increasing counselor collaboration, enhancing professional development, and maximizing student support services. These insights contribute to the wider discourse on educational management and policy reforms which aims to optimize the counselor’s role in Chinese higher education.
