To implement the requirements for innovation and entrepreneurship education in higher education institutions during the new era and promote the deep integration of professional courses with "innovation and entrepreneurship education", this study proposes a "challenge-based teaching model oriented towards innovation and entrepreneurship" using the Java Programming course as an example. Grounded in Outcome-Based Education (OBE) and constructivist learning theory, the teaching practice follows a logical sequence of "problem identification—task design—model construction—outcome validation". Through modular restructuring of course content, a three-stage teaching framework—"foundation—enhancement—innovation"—is established. A tiered challenge task chain—"learn—do—create"—is designed, leveraging the EduCoder platform to digitally implement task-driven teaching and process-based assessment. Empirical findings from 74 undergraduate students in the Internet of Things Engineering programme demonstrate that this model significantly enhances student engagement, programming proficiency, and innovative thinking, facilitating progressive development from knowledge acquisition to competency generation. This research provides a replicable pathway for computer science curriculum reform within the context of innovation and entrepreneurship education, while also offering practical guidance for course digital transformation and competency-oriented teaching.
